Original Madslide article from Looping Magazine

Another great set of scans from Laurent Berlivet of Jivaro Models, this time about one of my very favorite 3D / VTPR gliders, the Madslide by Benoit Paysant-Le Roux (known as BPLR for short). This article appeared in Looping back in the August/September 2000 issue and, when read, still inspires a passionate interest in the design today.

Back when our merry band of aerobatic enthusiasts on RCGroups was trying to sort out Madflight in 2008, BPLR was kind enough to share some very timely Madflight tips with us. Thanks to his timely intervention, and confirmed by our own experiments, the “secret” to Madflight is having at least 180* total rotation on the horizontal stabilizer. Then the flips come fast and furious! :)

Big thanks to Laurent for again sharing such a classic article with us!

Note that plans for the Madslide in both 1.5m and 2.3m size are available for free on Laurent’s website: Madslide plans

Treasure trove of French VTPR photos courtesy Jivaro Models

Laurent Berlivet of Jivaro-Models was kind enough to send over this amazing collection of photos. Many have been featured previously in French hobby magazines. There’s a wide array of notable VTPR gliders and sites, everything from the Air-100 at the beach in Brittany, to Excaliburs at Ménez-Hom, to Saltos in Andorra, and a whole lot more. Plus a handful of classic BPLR Giant Zlin photos – those never get old!!

Enjoy, and big thanks to Laurent for sharing these!! :)

Apologies in advance: this video was shot with my headcam and it isn’t zoomed in enough. In fact, it’s pretty crappy footage overall. Watch it in fullscreen for best results. That being said, I feel that the flying presented gives an inkling of what this Madslide-inspired design is capable of, so maybe it’s useful if you’ve been considering getting a Slopemaster or Kulbutin and/or scratchbuilding a true Madslide (recommended – plans here).

I’m not sure if this model is still on the market, but it’s basically a complete Madslide clone/knockoff, I believe produced without BPLR’s permission, based on plans published around 2000 or so in various R/C hobby magazines like Looping from France.

Anyways, I was able to obtain one thanks to my friend Swiss Peter, and have finally gotten enough flying time with it, in enough different conditions, to begin to form an opinion. Maiden was a couple weeks ago at Pt. Fermin (I know, right?? LOL) and I’ve flown it about 4-5 times since. Reviews I’ve read online have pretty much panned it, but I actually really like it! It’s reasonably fast for an aerobat, has good control response, is very neutral in knife edge, and is just a lot of fun to whack around the sky.

I haven’t totally mastered the Madflight-style flip-loop with it, and unfortunately this video doesn’t show any done properly, but so long as I do them crosswind, I can usually pull them off. I found I had to move the CG pretty far back from my initial position to get them to start working, and whether they work or not has been totally dependent on CG (per the Madflight tips from BPLR I got a while back).

The elevator is setup with about 75* of deflection in either direction (so about 150* total) and obviously on high rates I have to run a lot of expo to keep it flyable. Despite this, and probably because I’ve got a decent digital servo on the elevator, I find its precision to be more than good enough for my needs.

Ultimately, the goal is to keep moving the CG rearward and eventually add a gyro (which I’ve already purchased and have ready to install) to help control pitch with significantly rearward CGs. I want to see if its possible to have a plane that’s easy and fun to fly while at the same time allowing ridiculous flip-loop action.

BPLR’s Madslide

This video was filmed in 2001 but I think it just came online within the last year or so… it’s definitely the most impressive Madslide video I’ve seen to date! Really hard to resist the temptation to scratchbuild an EPP version of this plane.

Madflight Tips from BPLR

Benoit Paysant-Le Roux, aka BPLR, one of the world’s greatest R/C pilots and progenitor of the Madslide 3D glider, was kind enough to respond to an email inquiry I sent him concerning how to successfully pull off the “flip loops” shown in his awesome King Madslide video.

Madslide plans available for download

Great news from our friends at Jivaro Models: Benoit Paysant-Le Roux (aka BPLR) has made the plans for both the 1500mm and 2300mm versions of the Madslide available for download (non-commercial use only). This is an awesome opportunity to build one of the hottest VTPR gliders around… check it out!
